Yamaha Rules. Which One? How to Build a High End Audiophile Grade System Cheap
Yamaha has always produced a receiver that stood out amongst the crowd for transparency; sounds that were in the background of other receiver were brought to the forefront. Instruments muffled or should I say more muted that reside in the mid-range spectrum are brought forth with more clarity. The leading consumer reporting magazine gave the predecessor Yamaha RXV-663 their top award. Then along came the re-engineered 665 and if you read the reviews here that was a black sheep. Now they are back with the 671 garnering lots of 5 star reviews, and only a few 4 stars. Yamaha did it again. The only problem is that the 665 had in addition to amplified sound a separate pre-amp section, and they also had two sub-woofer outs. (More about why that is so critical soon)

RXV-671BL: Yamahas latest entry in the 600 series is the 671 and that lost the separate pre's and dual subwoofer outputs but picked up Ethernet connectivity; a whole new ball game. Streaming online updates, and...

Nice Unit
I also got this receiver from Costco to replace a 12 year old Yamaha. The performance has been excellent. I especially like the Network capability. Not only can I listen to Pandora natively, I can control the unit with any device on my network. So I can turn it on from bed with a smartphone!

This model also supports two speaker zones and they can play independent sources. Or you can add a ridiculous number (11) of speakers to the main playing area (7.2 + presence). I am only running 5.1 with the TV and have a second zone in another room.

Speaker setup was easy with YPAO microphone. It still took me about a day to set up this unit, almost as much time as replacing a PC.

The only thing I do not like so much is the remote. I find it is much easier to control the unit with a GUI on the phone or laptop. The remote has two slide switches and 83 buttons! The scene buttons are helpful but any other action other than volume requires "studying" the...
Yamaha Rx-v871
I did not get this receiver from Amazon. In fact i ordered the older RX-v867 which was last years model with similar features from another web site. Since the RX-v867 were selling for under $500 when the new model came out they became hard to get and this website (art of sales) sent me the newer model instead- the 871 at the same price! Warning - This was B - Stock product but so was the v867. B-Stock per Yamaha means that the unit has been either refurbished, or used in a demo etc.

Anyways, i have had this for a week and have hooked up to PS3 (hdmi), HTPC (hdmi), yamaha CD player (analog) and the direct TV box (hdmi). My speakers are in a 5.1 setup although not in the ideal positions because of the baby proofing. As soon as i hooked up the receiver to my network (direct ethernet) it prompted for a firmware upgrade that went smoothly. Setup with the ypao was not as smooth as i would have liked, the levels for speaker output were really off with the surrounds much louder...
